RIP Gary Gygax

Haven't seen any details yet, but in honor of his passing, I've decided to learn that I'm a Neutral Good Human Wizard. I haven't played any role-playing games in years (and years and years) but it was nice re-immersing myself, if only briefly.

Been a little while
...and no good reason, really. I've actually been doing little to nothing of earth shattering importance, aside from struggling with my second draft (can anybody help with that??) and working. Work's been quiet since my boss is in the Philippines, and nothing else has really been shaking.

What's up out there?

Joke-Blogging, Writing
I was undecided whether I wanted to blog or not, but I just heard my new favorite joke:

    What's ET short for?

His legs are only a few inches long.

Actually, in the version I saw, the joke-teller held his hands a few inches apart and said "His legs are only this big." I love it. Probably going to put it in my book.

Anyway, nothing major exciting. We had a fairly nasty snow storm yesterday. I had to shovel the walks in front of the chapel twice... you could barely tell I had shoveled when I'd finished the 25-meter walk the first time. Then last night, during Jewish services, the guy who plows our parking lots drove his little plow up on the sidewalk (we drive our van up there all the time... they're not too narrow) and did the same thing I'd done in oh about 10 minutes. I thanked him, profusely (now I don't have to come in super-early on Sunday) but in the back, the very back of my mind, I was calling him a prick. A nice prick, but still a prick.

I'm also having trouble deciding what to read. I left the book I just started at home, and down here at the coffee shop I have a choice between Look Homeward, Angel, A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius, Runaway, The Law of Similars, and Chasing Cezanne. I've read You Can't Go Home Again by Thomas Wolfe, short stories by Alice Munro, and travel writing by Peter Mayle, but otherwise haven't read any of these books. I linked to all of them hoping that one of you could help me... either comment, or hit my YIM at 'cjkc20'.

Alright, back to my book. Second drafts suck. First drafts are fun. Second draft is kind of fun because you're rediscovering your book, but mostly, it's just tedious work.

Well, this is interesting...

I've said before that if the leaders of the Israeli Jewish and Israeli Arab communities would just shut up for a few weeks, a lot of the problems would, if not disappear, be a little more manageable. This opinion was based on stories I'd heard from jewfroart's parents (they met in Jerusalem while they were both living there) and from my own experience with Arab muslims in the military, but it's nice to have confirmation. Apparently, when left to their own devices, Israeli Arabs and Israeli Jews are actually getting along, as many young Arabs are volunteering for national service and otherwise taking part in Israeli society. An excerpt:

"This is astonishing on a number of fronts: First, it suggests that what most people think about the loyalty of Israeli Arabs may be just wrong. Second, it suggests an enormous disparity between what elected officials are saying on a central issue of political identity, and what their own voters actually believe–which makes one wonder what the point of all those elections was. Third, it suggests that Israeli Arab leaders are much more interested in appearing to be a part of the Arab world than in advancing the actual interests of their constituents–which makes one wonder where their funding must be coming from. Finally, it suggests that, contrary to proper democratic functioning, there is something preventing more reasonable candidates from being fielded among the Israeli Arab community."

Vote 'Miscount' in New York
Sorry for the rapid-fire posts, but I had to put this up before I lost the links. I'd read the article over the weekend but since I'm telling people about it, I wanted to put up my sources. So: here is the blog post that I read originally, and here is the story that the blogger references. Considering all the hooplah on the last two presidential elections regarding voter miscount and disenfranchisement, I'm seriously wondering why this story doesn't have longer legs.
